Retirement jobs you can do from the beach
As soon as you reach retirement age, you plan to bid adieu to your boss and co-workers and hit the beach for some care-free, lazy days in the sun. Not so fast. Upon closer inspection of your retirement funds, you notice that your home value is falling, your RRSP is dwindling and your other savings accounts are gasping for air. Thanks to the recent recession, nest eggs across the nation are shrinking and would-be retirees are finding themselves in a sticky situation. So, it looks like you'll have to pack up your Speedo, put away the sunscreen and get back to work. But wait. There is another option.

Signs You Are In The Wrong Job
Work. You’re not quite content. Nevertheless you shuttle to and fro every business day. You know with a sigh of resignation that nothing in life is perfect. Little optimism goes long way
While Canadians, and particularly newsmakers, have always had a pessimistic habit of believing that when the United States economy catches a cold, Canada will also automatically suffer, this has not proven to be totally true during these past few years. Yes, Ontario, especially the auto-heavy industrial areas have suffered, the oil patch has slowed down and manufacturing businesses in Manitoba have felt the squeeze, but if we are honest with ourselves, we would recognize that Canada as a whole hasn't fared too badly.

Labour Market Information in a Nutshell!

In a nutshell:

§       Since October 2008, employment has fallen in most industries, with the steepest declines in manufacturing (-11.0%), natural resources (-11.0%), construction (-5.8%) and transportation and warehousing (-5.8%).  At the same time, there were increases in information, culture and recreation (+4.8%) as well as in finance, insurance, real estate and leasing (+4.4%).

§       Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba and Newfoundland and Labrador experienced notable employment losses in October. In all other provinces, employment was little changed. Since October 2008, Alberta, Ontario and Newfoundland and Labrador were the only provinces with faster rates of employment decline than the national average.

§       Manufacturing and warehousing, still declining in Ontario

§       Adult women aged 25 and over and youths aged 15 to 24 accounted for all of the employment decline in October

§       There were declines in the number of private and public sector employees in October, partially offset by gains in self-employment

Ellen’s Note:  For Ontario:  Most of the decline happened during the first 5 months of the economic downturn, so there has only been a “slight” downturn since May, but no significant upturn.

So, 2010 has to be better, right?

Leverage Twitter for Your Job Search
Until now, search engines for social media sites merely looked for words. We're looking at context. We use semantic tools to look at what was said. We then look at what they've said before. We then look at who was saying it. If we do this right, we can figure out why they're saying anything at all.

Honda feeling labour shortage in Alliston
Posted November 2, 2009 - New Tecumseth Free Press Online
The sons and daughters of Honda Canada Manufacturing associates with previous experience working at the auto assembly plants in Alliston will be given preferential opportunities as long as they're returning to college or university in the fall of 2010 in a new round of student hiring to deal with "additional manpower" needs. In a "shift start notice" issued today to all its associates, it's noted that "revised budget submissions" from the various departments "have identified a need for additional manpower." "This manpower is required to improve quality and delivery and to allow movement of associates to currently open positions in various areas including New Model preparation," according to the notice. "The meet these manpower needs we will be hiring a limited number of students starting in early November." Qualified students will have to be available from November to Sept. 3, 2010. The student labour will fill in where contract associates used to but in the deep round of cost-cutting and production reduction measures last winter, HCM eliminated approximately 2,000 of its contract workers through early termination buy-outs. Students are paid on average $6 less per hour than contract employees, no benefits, and no vacations.
